BKSM Conversation and Compline:
Vestments and Clerical Attire

"A priest forever in the order of Melchizedek." (Psalm 110:4, Hebrews 8:1)

Christians believe that Jesus is the Messiah spoken of in this way in Psalm 110.  Like Melchizedek, Jesus was not a descendant of Aaron, and would not qualify for the Jewish priesthood.  The author of Hebrews  explains why the priesthood of Melchizedek is superior to the Jewish priesthood in many ways.

Christian clergy have a particular way of clothing themselves that indicate that they are set apart for a holy purpose.  What do they wear, and why do they wear it?

On Tuesday, March 2, , we will meet and discuss the following:
  • Clergy street attire.  Cassock and accoutrement, clergy shirts, collars, and collar studs.
  • Liturgical undergarments.  Surplice, amice, alb, and cincture.
  • Vestments.  Stole, maniple, chasuble, dalmatic, tunicle, and cope.
  • Headgear.  Zucchetto, biretta, mitre, saturno.
  • Misc.  Tippet, academic hood, cappa negra (cloak), and vesting prayers.

We'll cover the history of some of these items at a high level, and I will provide recommendations on where they might be purchased. If you have specific questions, please submit them using the form below so that I can be sure I'm prepared to respond!

Peace,
Fr. Charles
