Leona Lou Schaefer (aka Fiona) was born on May 22nd, 1946 in Lebanon, Ohio to Orville and Norma Hullinger. She died on September 2nd, 2021 in Kansas City, Missouri.

She was raised in Marysville, Ohio. She attended The Ohio State University, where she received a Bachelor of Education degree, as a Spanish major. She taught at several schools in Columbus.

Leona was a member of the First Congregational Church, where she joined the Choir whose Director was John Schaefer. In due course, they were married on December 16, 1972.

They moved to Greenfield, Massachusetts, where she was employed as Secretary in the Office of College Counseling at Northfield-Mount Hermon School. In 1976, they moved to Kansas City, where she was employed for 26 years at St. Paul Fire and Marine Insurance Company. Thereafter, she was employed in a variety of jobs, always doing stellar work.

She enjoyed the music of Eric Satie and his contemporaries, the paintings of Claude Monet and his contemporaries, the Morse mysteries, Harry Potter stories, and much more. She was keenly dedicated to making people happy, unfailingly loving to so many. She has been described as 'a brick', by her husband as 'his best boy' as a singer and musician, as a lover of cats, as an all round good person.

Her funeral service will take place at St. Mary's Episcopal Church on September 25th at 1:00 p.m..  The service will include her internment in the columbarium at the Annunciation Chapel at St. Mary's.  A reception will immediately follow the service.

Besides her husband John, she is survived by her sister Carolyn and her husband Walter, and many nieces and nephews. She will be missed and long remembered.

In lieu of flowers, John requests that you consider a donation to the music ministry of St. Mary's Church or Wayside Waifs in Leona's name.

Leona was loved by so many that we are already at capacity for the funeral.
For those who did not previously pre-register to attend in-person, we invite you to attend the service virtually.

The service will be livestreamed on our YouTube channel here.
