The Sacraments
According to the catechism in the Book of Common Prayer "The Sacraments are outward and visible signs of inward and spiritual grace, given by Christ as sure and certain means by which we receive that grace"(BCP, 857). Holy Baptism and the Holy Eucharist are considered the two great Sacraments of the Gospel, as they are the two Sacraments instituted by the Lord himself unto salvation. Baptism and the Eucharist are the ordinary means by which God, through the Church, imparts His saving grace to the world. The catholic tradition of the church also numbers Confirmation, Reconciliation of a Penitent (Confession), Holy Matrimony, Holy Orders, and Anointing of the Sick (Holy Unction) as Sacraments.
Holy Baptism
"Holy Baptism is the Sacrament by which God adopts us as His children and makes us members of Christ's Body, the Church, and inheritors of the Kingdom of God"(BCP, 858). In baptism we are initiated into the life of the Holy Trinity and it is through the waters of baptism that we receive forgiveness of sins as we die with Christ and are granted a share in His Resurrection life. Those who desire to be baptized are invited to contact one of our priests to begin the appropriate sacramental preparation.

The Holy Eucharist (Holy Communion)
"The Holy Eucharist is the Sacrament commanded by Christ for the continual remembrance of His life, death, and resurrection, until His coming again"(BCP, 859). The Holy Eucharist is the Sacrament through which the faithful receive the precious Body and Blood of the Lord, the forgiveness of our sins, the strengthening of our union with Christ and one another, and the foretaste of the heavenly banquet which is our nourishment in eternal life. It is the practice of the Episcopal Church to invite all baptized Christians to receive Holy Communion.

Confirmation
"Confirmation is the rite in which we express a mature commitment to Christ, and receive strength from the Holy Spirit through prayer and the laying on of hands by a bishop"(BCP, 860). If you are interested in receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation please contact one of our priests to begin the appropriate sacramental preparation. The Sacrament of Confirmation is offered at St. Mary's periodically in conjunction with the Bishop's visit or at an area wide Confirmation service.

Reconciliation of a Penitent (Confession)
"Reconciliation of a Penitent, or Penance, is the rite in which those who repent of their sins may confess them to God in the presence of a priest, and receive the assurance of pardon and the grace of absolution"(BCP, 861). There is an old, Anglican adage when it comes to confession: "All may, some should, and none must." This principle guides our approach to Reconciliation at St. Mary's. Confession is available on Wednesdays from 5-5:45 p.m., or by appointment with one of the priests.

Anointing of the Sick (Holy Unction)

Holy Unction is offered periodically at St. Mary's within the context of the Holy Mass. If you desire to receive Holy Unction outside of those times (e.g., when hospitalized, prior to surgery, etc.), please alert one of the priests.
