The William Baker Festival Singers have been appointed as Chorus-in-Residence at the historic St. Mary's Episcopal Church in downtown Kansas City. The relationship begins with the 2018-2019 concert season and extends through the 2020-2021 season. The magnificently restored 19th century nave of the downtown church will become the primary concert home of the 50-voice semi-professional chorale, as the choir performs three subscription concerts each season, presents choral music for Evensong twice per year, and collaborates with the Music Ministry of the church in a number of other events.
The William Baker Festival Singers traces its history to the creation of the original ensemble in Atlanta in 1985. The ensemble established it home in Kansas City in 1998 and has recently completed a 20th anniversary concert season that culminated in a May 6 performance before a capacity audience at St. Mary's Church. The Festival Singers have been featured in radio broadcasts from The First Art to National Public Radio's Performance Today. The chorus has released over two dozen recordings, and has performed in prestigious venues that include Canterbury Cathedral, Spivey Hall, Trinity Wall Street Church in New York City, St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans, St. James Cathedral in Chicago, and the Cathedral Basilica in St. Louis. In October 2018, the Festival Singers will perform in the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception and the National Cathedral in Washington, DC. The Festival Singers is the flagship ensemble of the Roeland Park, Kansas-based Choral Foundation, a national organization that sponsors ten performing ensembles based in three states, Amber Waves Music Publishing, the Institute for Healthy Singing, and the Jane Sullivan Choral Resource Library.
St. Mary's Episcopal Church was founded in 1857, when Kansas City was still a small frontier outpost. From its earliest days the congregation has valued diversity and community outreach. Known for its commitment to excellence in worship and music in the Anglo-Catholic tradition, the progressive congregation of St. Mary's is remarkable as an eclectic and inclusive faith community. The values of unconditional love, acceptance, celebration, hope, faith and hospitality that have defined St. Mary's Episcopal Church for over 150 years are the core values of the Festival Singers and the Choral Foundation. Both the leadership of the Festival Singers and St. Mary's are honored more than words can express to be joining this partnership of service, beauty, hope and love.
The first Kansas City area performance by the William Baker Festival Singers for their 21st concert season in 2018-2019 will be Sunday, November 4, 3:00 PM. The chorus will have just returned from their scheduled tour to Washington, DC and Virginia.
